Electro-oxidation (EO) is a technique used for wastewater treatment, particularly for industrial effluents. It is a type of advanced oxidation process (AOP) that involves the application of an external source of energy into an electrochemical cell containing one or more pairs of electrodes. The process works by forming strong oxidizing species at the anode, which interact with contaminants and degrade them. The refractory compounds are converted into reaction intermediates and ultimately into water and CO2 through complete mineralization.

Key Features of Electro-Oxidation:

Electrochemical Cell: The setup consists of an electrochemical cell with two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, connected to a power source.

Formation of Oxidizing Species: When an energy input and sufficient supporting electrolyte are provided, strong oxidizing species are formed at the anode surface, which interact with contaminants and degrade them.

Hydroxyl Radicals: Hydroxyl radicals (HO•) are highly reactive oxidants that can react with nearly all organic contaminants and mineralize them to CO2 and H2O non-selectively in ambient pressure and atmospheric temperature.

Anode Materials: The anode materials can vary greatly according to the application, with boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes being commonly used for their high efficiency in generating reactive species.

Cathode Materials: Cathodes are typically made of stainless steel plates, platinum mesh, or carbon felt electrodes.

Efficiency: Electro-oxidation can eliminate contaminants through direct oxidation at the anode/aqueous solution interface and via anodically generated intermediates, such as reactive oxygen species.

Advantages: Electro-oxidation does not require external addition of chemicals, is relatively easy to set up, and can be combined with other technologies to achieve high degradation standards while reducing operational costs.

Applications: Electro-oxidation has been applied to treat a wide variety of harmful and non-biodegradable contaminants, including aromatics, pesticides, drugs, and dyes
